SB 79

Dear Neighbors,

Please write (sample email below) to State Assemblyman Isaac Bryan by September 7 and ask him to vote NO on SB79 (State Senate Bill 79).

SB 79 establishes new state zoning standards around train stations and major bus stops to allow 7-story or higher multifamily buildings (without parking) within a half mile from such stops in the middle of streets with single family homes. Additionally, designated Historic Zones and buildings will no longer be protected, including the Jefferson Park HPOZ.

Please send an email to our State Assemblymember Bryan and copy his staff by September 7, 2025.

SAMPLE EMAIL:

Dear Asssemblyman Bryan,

As a resident of your Assembly District 55, I am asking you to VOTE NO on SB79 because it will:

  • IMPOSE an unfunded mandate resulting in a $1.6 billion cost to the City for necessary infrastructure upgrades and enhancements to first responder budgets in Los Angeles alone.

  • NOT REQUIRE sufficient affordable housing for very low income or any housing/services for the homeless.

  • DESTROY neighborhoods and communities by overriding existing zoning within a half mile of major rail/bus stops.

  • DESTROY South LA’s hard-won generational wealth/equity.

  • SILENCE the voices of underserved communities that have been historically burdened with top-down zoning rules.

  • UNDERMINE Los Angeles’ State approved climate, transportation, and housing commitments.

  • DESTROY part of the Jefferson Park Historic Preservation Overlay Zone (HPOZ) which is within a half mile of a major rail stop. The bill will allow uncontrolled SB79 development within the Jefferson Park HPOZ and will result in the destruction of the character defining elements that make it a protected historic zone. Please DO NOT erase the multi-cultural history, heritage and inheritance of our community as is being done at the federal level.

The primary beneficiaries of the bill will be developers, land speculators, and financiers seeking to build new, largely market-rate, six to seven story apartment buildings, and potentially10.5 stories, on properties that are currently often rent controlled, naturally-occurring affordable, single and multi-family sites.

Please support our community by voting against SB79 and urge your colleagues to vote NO too.

Thank you,
